October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month! Our agency services are here to help you or your family if you struggle with the trauma from abuse. Family Counseling Center provides abuse and trauma counseling; Rape Counseling Center provides services to victims of sexual assault and their families; Consumer Credit Counseling Service can help you restore your finances that may have be affected because of an abusive relationship; United Way 2-1-1 can provide you with referrals to the Penelope House Family Violence Shelter, Lighthouse Family Violence Shelter and other community service programs preventing domestic violence. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, • Every 9 seconds in the US, a woman is assaulted or beaten. • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of [some form of] physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime • 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the United States has been raped in their lifetime • Almost half of female (46.7%) and male (44.9%) victims of rape in the United States were raped by an acquaintance.
